Are You Training Or Do You “Wing It”?
I wouldn’t consider this an effective training program! Sending canvassers to the streets with a pat on the back, a thumbs up and a, “go get-um kid!” is less than a good start.
Do you have a canvassing training program?
If you do, is your training for new hires the same as for seasoned canvassers?
Training for seasoned canvassers brings up another question. Do you have ongoing training for them or do you wait until their numbers start to drop?
Sports programs at every level (collegiate/professional) have different training programs tailored to the player. If an athlete is new to the program they have a training designed to orient them to the fundamentals so they have a strong foundation to build upon. For the seasoned athletes, they have a program to keep them sharp. Regardless if a rookie or seasoned veteran, professionals continue to practice over and over… that’s one thing that makes them professional.
Even professional musicians practice before a concert he or she has given hundreds of times before. Canvassers are professional lead generators and they’re no different than a professional athlete or musician; their skills must be continually nurtured and improved.
Another question you should ask yourself, “Is our training program built on a system or do we just “wing it”?
If you’re starting up a new canvassing program do you have anyone who’s seasoned enough to set-up the program and train new canvassers right?
There’s an important correlation between the last two questions I asked. Many companies that start out put so much responsibility on one person (the canvass manager) rather than on a system. Doing so can set you up to fail. What happens if that key person doesn’t work out or leaves the company? What happens to the program then? What happens to the time, money and resources you’ve invested in the program and/or that person? You may be interested to hear about a new program I’ve developed called, “How to find, recruit and qualify the right Canvass Manager for your company.”
You’ll discover more about this and many other new turnkey programs I’ve developed to help the new and experienced canvassers, canvass managers and canvassing programs. Until then, I wanted you to start thinking about your company’s canvass training.
Next month I’ll discuss how to implement the right training program for new hires.
