Training Better Canvassers
Rookie canvassers are eager to learn their craft, whereas there isn’t much new for veteran canvassers to learn. Canvassing isn’t complex. Yet there’s a lot that veteran canvassers could be doing to better themselves. Anyone who’s great at what they do is always working to get better.
Jerry Rice was the NFL’s all-time leader in receptions, yards and touchdowns. Walter Payton retired from the NFL as the all-time leader for combined yardage. What do these two people have in common? They both were veteran professional football players and they both maintained a post season training and regiment that was more rigorous than during football season. The point is that these two professionals knew the game of football, but they continually worked on getting better. For them it was all about Attitude and Work Ethic, as it should be for you.
Additionally, veteran canvassers can be extremely helpful for rookie canvassers. You can lead by example and mentor other less experienced people. You can actually learn more yourself when you start teaching others. In fact, when I moved from canvasser to trainer I got better at what I did. Everyone learns differently and by teaching and looking for the way to help the rookies understand it forces you to look at what you do more intently, analyzing it and breaking it down. It gives you the opportunity to see it through their eyes.
Next month I’ll go into more detail as to the specifics of what the veteran canvasser can do.
