I spent the majority of October discussing what you can do to be productive between the end of canvassing season 2011 and the start of it 2012, not only here in this article, but also on my Teleseminars and in conversations with private clients. It seems to be the subject consuming everyone’s thoughts and activities.
In all the years I’ve canvassed and have coached canvassers it’s a common paralysis that happens this time of year, but doesn’t have to. If you were on the last Teleseminar you heard me discuss all the things I did in my company to productively bridge the gap between seasons.
I took a 2-part approach to the off-season. You can use the holidays as the reason people should consider home improvements; plus we ran special promotions during the holidays to call people’s attention to it. Internally I ran contests (i.e. Winter Warrior) to keep canvassers focused on the objectives at hand … to continue generating leads even though the weather changed and it gets darker earlier.
Plus, January and February is the time for big home shows. Utilize canvassers in your booth to engage people. It’s very difficult to sell home improvements on the floor of the trade show when homeowners have access to all of your competitors, so use the people most skilled at capturing leads … your canvassers.
You can also implement a spotted lead program. Spotted leads are a great way to set up the opening of your season with a flurry of qualified homeowners ready to consider home improvements. I won’t go into the details of this program here, but you can get the details of the program from my last Teleseminar. The bottom line is you have to take a purposefully strategic approach to your canvassing efforts in order to bridge the gap between “seasons.”
With that said, I’ve given a lot of thought to what I can do to help maximize getting you through what most consider the “slow” time of the year. There’s no doubt, production does slow down, but it doesn’t have to come to a screeching halt. That’s more a result of mindset than reality.
I’ve had contact with more home improvement companies, owners, managers and canvassers in 2011 than any year previous, and I’m thankful for that. When I decided to leave the day-to-day operations of my own home improvement company, it was to coach and consult others full time. It was my goal to help as many people as possible. Honestly I never expected the demand to be so great. It did create somewhat of a challenge for me in being able to serve more people, because let’s face it, just like you; I only have so many hours in each day. It has forced me to find ways to multiply myself through technology.
